studied scriptwriting at the Prague Film School (FAMU). He is writer and director of several successful films: Mňága – Happy End (1996), his feature film directorial debut, won an award at the 1996 Cottbus Film Festival in Germany. The film Buttoners (Knoflíkáři, 1997) has become a major Czech cult film of the decade, winning many local and international awards (among others the Czech Lion 1997 for Best Movie – Czech Film Academy Award; Tiger Award 1998 for Best Feature Film, Rotterdam Film Festival; 1st prize in the “In & Out” section of the Sarajevo Film Festival; Silver Alexander (2nd prize), Thessaloniki Film Festival; FIPRESCI Prize, Valladolid Film Festival). His feature film Year Of The Devil (Rok ďábla, 2002) also gained him several international and local awards. Another feature film Wrong Side Up (Příběhy obyčejného šílenství, 2005) is based on Petr Zelenka’s original play and was awarded the prize of Russian Film Critics at the International Moscow Film Festival 2005, a Czech Lion and a Bergamo Film Festival award. The Karamazovs (Karamazovci, 2008), based on F. M. Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov and on a stage play by Evald Schorm, won a FIPRESCI Prize at Karlovy Vary IFF 2008 and Czech Lion Awards for Best Film and Best Director. Petr Zelenka wrote the script for the film Loners (Samotáři, 2000, directed by David Ondříček) which became a box-office number-one hit of the year in the Czech Republic. Petr Zelenka is author of several stage plays: Tales Of Common Insanity (Příběhy obyčejného šílenství, Dejvicke Theatre, Prague, 2001) have been translated into many languages (English, German, Hungarian and others) and won the Alfred Radok Prize for the Best Original Play. The play Train Departures (Odchody vlakov, 2004) is based on Michael Frayn´s short piece Chinamen and written for Theatre Astorka Korzo ´90 Bratislava, Slovakia. Theremin (Dejvicke Theatre, Prague, 2005, directed by Petr Zelenka) has also been produced abroad (Theatre by the Bridge, Perm, Russia and the Warsaw Drama Theatre, Poland). Coming Clean (Očištění, 2007) was written for and directed at The Old Theatre, Krakow, Poland and received the Alfred Radok Prize for Best Original Play. Endangered Species (Ohrožené druhy, National Theatre, Prague, 2011, directed by Peter Zelenka). Dabing Street (Dejvické Theatre, Prague, 2012, directed by Petr Zelenka).
